The term FUE( Follicular Unit Extraction) mainly refers to the method of extraction of hair follicles from the donor area, with direct extraction of individual hair follicles (known as “hair-by-hair”).

The area is shaved in whole or in parts, in such a way that it does not become evident, and hair from above fall onto the underlying donor area, while this is followed by the removal of hair follicles.

The FUE hair transplantation technique is performed by individual extraction of hair follicles from the Zone of Stable Hair Growth (back & side parts of the head) and their transplantation in the recipient thinning area.

FUE literately reproduces the natural way that hair sprouts: since it grows in sets of 1 to 4 hair strings (or even more in several cases), which are called Hair Follicles, the hair transplantation process consists of taking hair follicles from the back & side parts of the head, and transferring them to the area of the head where thinning appears.

the main features of the FUE method are the following:

1.  Taking hair follicles from the donor area one-by-one, i.e. Hair-by-Hair.

  1. Placing them, hair follicle – by – hair follicle.

    3.Painless postoperative progress

    4. Absence of postoperative oedema: In the past, a proportion of the individuals who underwent hair implantation showed postoperative temporary frontal oedema, now, however, under the protocol applied by our medical team, an oedema rarely appears (yet, there is always the possibility for this to happen).

The FOX Test is an essential requirement in a number of cases, in order to ensure that taking hair follicles is performed without any losses (e.g. when there is a high rate of curly hair, this causes problems to taking hair follicles)

When do we apply the FUE technique ?

In any case, we can apply the FUE technique and repeat it for several times depending on the recovery it needs.

Especially in some cases it is preferable, such are:

•    In cases of a donor area with thin hair, hair of limited elasticity, or particular restoration problems (for example, skins that tend to hold scars)

•    In cases that the application of the Strip method is not possible (lack of skin elasticity)

•    In cases of taking a small number of hair follicles for minor incidents, such as:

  1. In cases of covering scars from accidents or an old-type STRIP scar
  2. For the formation of eyebrows
  3. Restoration of a beard
  4. Restoration of sideburns

Description of the FUE hair transplantation technique:

The planning of the schedule of the operation is performed by utilizing the results from the individual diagnosis & detailed hair testing. The hair transplantation medical team makes full use of the donor area’s potential to contribute hair follicles, and at the same time, takes care of the maintenance of stock in case that there are future needs for an upcoming session. The evaluation of the future progress of hair loss, therefore, comprises a decisive factor for planning the schedule of the operation.

1) After the preparation of the person concerned by the nursing team, local anesthesia is performed.

2) The physician carefully selects & takes the hair follicles one-by-one, from disperse points of the donor area.

3) Next, he or she creates the sockets of the hair follicles in the recipient area (the area in which the hair follicles will be transplanted). In terms of the creation of the sockets, certain specifications are observed, which concern their size and distance between them. The holes are small in order not to disturb the elasticity and microcirculation of the recipient area, ensuring in this way the proper conditions for the sprouting, nourishment & growth of new hair. Moreover, they are performed within small distance from each other and under a specific angle of sprouting – and always in line with what is permitted, in order for them to be as close as possible, and ensure maximum density per cm2. This meticulous and considered layout of hair follicles is very important for both the natural appearance of the result and the achievement of maximum density.

4)The stage of placing the hair follicles is the more challenging part of the process from a technical point of view. The hair follicles are transplanted in the sockets of the recipient area along with the connecting tissue that surrounds them: those containing one hair sting are placed along the hairline – forming indentations and protrusions, just like in natural sprouting – while hair follicles with 2, 3 or 4 hair strings cover the thinning area as we proceed to the inner part of the scalp.

Duration of the hair transplant operation:

The whole process is completed within 4 to 10 hours, depending on the incident and the number of hair follicles to be placed.

Return to usual activities:

After the hair transplantation, you will be able to return to your activities within a short time. There are cases – always depending on the type of occupation – that return to work can even take place on the following day after the operation. The physician offers personalized briefing and gives specific instructions & directions, depending on the occupation & the activities of each person concerned.

Postoperative check & instructions

The head physician of the hair transplantation will check the donor & the recipient area, and after he or she provides you, in verbal and in writing, with all the necessary postoperative instructions, you can return home.

New hair growth:

New hair grows naturally, immediately after its transplantation, and within 3-5 months, the first results begin to appear, which are completed after the 10th month. The transplanted hair grows just like the other hair and remains forever. You can wash it, have it cut, comb it, and apply any type of hairdressing treatment to it, since it is no different than the other hair.
